BASE jumping, or fixed object jumping is the ultimate in extreme sports. BASE is an acronym that stands for BUILDING / ANTENNA / SPAN / EARTH. It is a sport that is truly considered EXTREME by every measure of the word.
The sport takes the skills learned from Skydiving and uses them to jump from fixed objects. Although the equipment of today’s BASE jumper looks much like that of skydiving equipment, it is specially made to meet the demands of the extreme environment the sport presents.
Special equipment and modifications allow jumpers to safely exit from objects as low as 300 feet or lower and land without injury. Freefalls can last anywhere from one second to over a minute depending on the height of the object being jumped from.
It is truly an amazing sight to watch a BASE jumper leap from a tall building in a crowded city, open his/her parachute safely, then land with precession accuracy on the streets below.
BASE jumping for years was an underground sport. Although not as illegal as many people thought, jumpers sometimes trespassed in order to get the altitude they needed to make a safe jump.
Today BASE jumping is an accepted sport in many countries around the world. Some countries actually invite BASE jumpers to their cities in order to gain world recognition through the publicity the BASE jumpers generate.
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia actually hosts the world Championship of BASE jumping from what was until recently the world’s tallest building, the Petronas Twin Towers. Norway with its shear 3,000-foot walls attracts hundreds of jumpers each year who make thousands of jumps. And more recently, the Jing Mao building in Shanghai, China has started hosting BASE jumping demonstrations. See BASE Jumping Photographs and BASE Jumping Videos.
Even the United States participates in BASE jumping. For years the New River Gorge Bridge in West Virginia has hosted Bridge Day, a single day BASE event that attracts over 250,000 spectators and over 400 BASE jumpers. The day is filled with as many as 800 plus BASE jumps being made from the 876-foot bridge.
BASE jumping is an extreme sport performed by highly experienced individuals who have trained for years in order to make these dangerous jumps look easy. Only qualified individuals should ever attempt such a feat. Aerial Extreme has been performing BASE Jumping Stunts, Exhibition BASE Jumps, and leading BASE Jumping Expeditions for over twelve years.
